Aging 2020
By the year 2020, one in four Arizonans will be over the age of 60. If you think about it, that will change everything, from the faces you see in magazines and on TV, to the way cars are designed, to the types of programs and services we need. To ensure that Arizona is ready for such a demographic shift, Governor Janet Napolitano issued Executive Order 2004-07, called Aging 2020, which required fourteen state agencies to develop and implement plans to address the aging of Arizona’s population.
The agencies drafted their plans and between November 2004 and March 2005 the Governor’s Office conducted 40 public forums across the state to gather input from Arizona citizens regarding the plans. After incorporating that input, the plans were finalized into the Aging 2020 plan. Click here to view the original plan.
Once approved by Governor Napolitano, the state agencies began implementing their plans. The Aging 2020 Initiative is designed to be a dynamic strategic planning process, whereby the plan is integrated into broader agency efforts and updated on a regular basis. To this end, state staff meet regularly and provide implementation progress updates. Updates are posted here annually.
