Four Cornerstones of Reform
Renewed Federalism
Renewed federalism is about the founding principle that America has a federal government, not a national government. And the federal government should be as restrained as possible, with most powers reserved for the states.
Arizona has recently held the federal government accountable on two important fronts: Border Security and Healthcare. Governor Brewer is fighting to ensure that SB 1070, the State’s anti-illegal immigration measure, takes effect as intended. That fight has now reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which is considering whether to hear the case.
Additionally, on Feb. 10, 2011, the State filed a counterclaim against the federal government for failing to uphold its constitutional and statutory obligations. This includes failure to enforce immigration law, failure to protect Arizona citizens and failure to reimburse Arizona for its costs.
Meanwhile, Arizona has reformed and modernized healthcare by crafting a Medicaid reform plan to put the program on a sustainable path. It is the most comprehensive AHCCCS modernization effort to date, achieving more than $500 million in savings in the first year alone. Arizona also is helping lead the legal fight against ObamaCare, the federal government’s unconstitutional intrusion into the health care system.
