View Governor Jan Brewer's "Arizona's Education Reform Plan"
Governor Jan Brewer today announced the appointment of Dr. Craig Barrett as Chairman of the Arizona Ready Education Council, formerly known as the Governor’s P-20 Council. Dr. Barrett will lead the new Council in a focused implementation of Arizona’s education reform plan, Arizona Ready.

“Craig is the ideal choice to lead Arizona in this crucial educational endeavor,” said Governor Brewer. “With his proven success as a business leader and years of involvement in the education community, I have no doubt he will be instrumental in helping boost Arizona’s performance in the classroom.”

Dr. Barrett, a materials scientist and former Stanford University faculty member, is a retired CEO/Chairman for Intel Corp. He is a nationally-renowned leader in education reform, and is co-Chairman of Achieve Inc. and Chairman of Change the Equation, a national coalition of CEOs working to improve literacy in the key areas of science, technology, engineering and math. Dr. Barrett also is President and Chairman of BASIS School, Inc., nationally-acclaimed charter schools operating in Arizona.

“A quality education system is vital for Arizona’s economic growth and competiveness if we are going to attract and keep businesses such as Intel.  I am pleased to be asked by Governor Brewer to lead this distinguished Council and to move aggressively in ensuring that Arizona has a strong education system,” said Dr. Barrett. “We must ask more of our students; we must successfully implement the new internationally benchmarked Arizona Standards and assessment system; we must increase teacher training in mathematics and science; and we must be accountable for our progress in education reform.  The status quo is simply unacceptable.”

The Arizona Ready Education Council will develop and utilize an online “report card” to review the performance of Arizona students and coordinate efforts to improve achievement. Additionally, a series of high-profile state goals have been established for 2020, including
  • Increasing to 94 percent, up from 73 percent, the number of 3rd graders reading at or near grade level;
  • Increasing the high school graduation rate to 93 percent, up from 75 percent; and
  • Doubling the number of baccalaureate degrees issued by Arizona institutions of higher education.
To help achieve these and other goals, he Arizona Ready Education Council will focus on key strategies that include:
  • Implementation of Arizona’s new state education standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010;
  • Training and recruitment of teachers to implement these new standards; and
  • Implementation of a new, internationally-benchmarked assessment aligned to the standards.
“Together with this Council, the leadership of education innovators like Craig Barrett and the work of Superintendent Huppenthal, we are united in raising the bar for our schools and students and making certain they have the resources they need to succeed,” said Governor Brewer. “We will not fail because we cannot fail. The stakes for Arizona are too high.”
