50 State Quarter Program
A new state quarter comes out approximately every 10 weeks, in the order the states were admitted to the Union. Beginning in 1999, the ten-year program will conclude with the minting of Hawaii’s quarter in 2008. Arizona was admitted to the Union February 14, 1912 and is the 48th state. The Arizona Quarter will be minted in 2008. For more information on the 50 State Quarter Program or to see the state quarters already released, please click here. |

Milestones in the Design of the Arizona State Quarter
- Governor Napolitano created the Arizona Quarter Commission by Executive Order 2005-27 in November 2005. Extensive outreach was done to encourage Arizonans to apply to serve on the Commission.
- The Arizona Quarter Commission met for the first time in December 2005. Governor Napolitano asked the Commission to encourage all Arizona residents to put their state pride to work and submit a design for the Arizona quarter.
- Special outreach to students was done across the state in May 2006. Fourth grader Matthew Rounis, a commission member, spoke to students across Arizona encouraging them to submit designs.
- The Arizona Quarter Commission held 12 open meetings from November 2005 to July 2006 to encourage citizen participation and build interest in the Arizona Quarter. The Commission also conducted extensive outreach to the media, tribal leaders, clubs, schools and the public-at-large to obtain as much input from Arizonans as possible.
- In all, the Commission received more than 4,200 quarter designs from 79 Arizona communities. Thirty-six percent of the designs submitted featured the Saguaro Cactus as the primary design element. The second most popular design element was the Grand Canyon, which was featured in 14 percent of the designs submitted.
- The Commission considered narratives in the following categories:
- Natural elements – geography
- Natural elements – plants and wildlife
- Cultural diversity
- Historical events
- After much deliberation, the Commission voted on the five Arizona quarter design narratives in September 2006. The U.S. Treasury Department guidelines dictate that proposed quarter designs must be in the form of written narratives.
- In September 2006, the Commission transmitted the narratives to the U.S. Mint along with source material compiled by the Arizona State Library and Archives and the Arizona Historical Society, as required by the U.S. Mint to ensure historical accuracy of the proposed designs.
- In November 2006, the U.S. Mint produced original artwork of the concepts, focusing on aesthetic beauty, historical accuracy, appropriateness and “coinability.”
- The five designs were approved by the Fine Arts Commission and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Commission in Washington, D.C in January 2007.
- In January 2007, the five designs were sent to Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson for approval before being returned to Arizona for the Governor to make the final selection with input from Arizonans.
- April 10, 2007 Governor Napolitano asks Arizonans for input on the five final quarter designs.
- May 1, 2007 Arizonans choose the Grand Canyon - Saguaro design as their favorite. Governor Napolitano sends Arizona's final quarter decision to the U.S. Mint. The Arizona Quarter will be minted in May 2008.
